Tachibana 59th Regular Concert on March 25 and 26

It is time for the most prestigious brass band event of the year: Tachibana Regular Concert (video by NeRo). This is the bittersweet moment when we have to say farewell to Drum Major “Creta” and the rest of the 119th Class of the band members!

The Concert will take place at ROHM Theater Kyoto, with special guest jazz trumpeter Eric Miyashiro on March 25 and 26, 2023.

Physical tickets for the concerts were sold out in minutes but streaming tickets are still available. One day streaming ticket cost is ¥1000+¥440 (=USD11, =NTD335, =EUR10¼, =GBP9), and two-day ticket is ¥1500+¥440 (=USD15, =NTD450, =EUR14, =GBP12¼). Two-day ticket holders are also provided with a bonus video if you buy the ticket before 11:59pm JST on March 24, 2023 (click here for further instructions). In both days the concerts will start at 6pm JST (click here for the time in Japan right now). Fans in Europe, please note that the Summer Time begins in early hours of March 26 so be extra careful when setting up your clocks in the morning!

    Good evening everyone. I am M.K., drum major. Thank you very much for coming and listening to our regular concert today. I hope you enjoyed the First Half Stage. This year’s theme is “Seek the Shine,” and we have been working to make our club even brighter while continuing the traditions and good qualities of Tachibana. This year, as the Corona disaster has settled down and we have been able to perform in front of you more often, we have felt the warmth and connection with others and the gratitude of being able to perform in front of you. We are able to hold our regular concert in this way thanks to our teachers, parents, alumni, and all the people involved, as well as everyone who has always supported us. Thank you very much. As mentioned in the “First Half Stage,” we will be performing some of the most memorable pieces we have performed throughout the year on the “Second Half Stage,” and we will do our best to make this the culmination of the year’s work, so please enjoy the “Second Half Stage.”

        § Speech by the captain (Club President) in orange uniform

        　Good evening everyone. I am M.T., the club president. Thank you very much for coming and listening to our regular concert today.

        　We, all 87 members of our club, are performing daily under the motto of “full of energy, full of smiles, and full of dreams.” This year is our third year at Corona Disaster, and we have had the opportunity to participate in so many events. We have learned a lot and have many memories from all of these events. For us, participating in events is not only a chance to show you our performance, but it is also a chance to meet people. This year we had a lot of events, so we met a lot of people. As we interacted with so many people, we had many, many opportunities to realize that we have been supported by so many people in our activities. This is not only true of our club activities, but we have had many opportunities during this year to realize that we will continue to live with the support of others. I believe that we will continue to meet many people in the future and grow while experiencing the warmth of people and realizing how much we appreciate them. From now on, we would like to grow up to be able to support others, while being supported by them. And we will continue to do our best to bring cheer and smiles to others.

        　With today’s concert, the third-year students will retire. We third-year students started our activities at Corona Disaster when we were first-year students, and we have been performing at Corona Disaster for three years. Therefore, although our three years may have been different from what we had envisioned, I have no regrets at all. This is because, even though it was not what we had envisioned, we spent three years more than what we had envisioned. With the support of many people, and with the support of my friends, I was able to spend three truly fulfilling years, taking on many challenges over and over again. Even though the third-year students have retired, I am looking forward to seeing the new scenery of Kyoto Tachibana High School from the first and second-year students. Please continue to support the Kyoto Tachibana High School Brass Band.

        　Last but not least, I would like to thank our advisors who have guided us, the teachers who have taken care of our activities, the staff including the people at the Rohm Theater Kyoto who worked so hard for today’s concert, our parents who have always supported us, and all of you who have always been by our side. On behalf of all the members, I would like to express our gratitude to all of you who have always supported us.

      This is our third year at Corona House and this year we have been able to participate in so many events. Even though Corona is beginning to settle down, I am still grateful for all the opportunities I have had to participate in so many events.

      For us, an event is not only a performance, but also a chance to meet many people.

      We have had the opportunity to interact with so many people at the event, and we have realized over and over again that we are supported by so many people in our activities.

      It was a year in which we learned that we are supported not only by our club activities, but also by the people in our lives, and that it is very important to be supported by and connected to other people in our lives.

      I am sure that we will continue to be supported by many people in the future, and as we experience the warmth of people, we will grow while realizing how grateful we are for their support.     • Here is the very fast and crude machine translation of the speech given by Mr Kaneshiro at the end on Sunday’s Regular Concert:

        Kaneshiro-sensei’s greeting after Rod Stuart’s Sailing:
        Thank you very much for coming today. I am Kaneshiro, the club’s advisor.           (It’s not me, it’s The Machine!! It’s interesting to watch the translator screen as it tries to “understand” the speech in real time. Characters appear, disappear and reorganize as the sentences progress. I think it leaves a lot away that it does hear, because “it wants” to form complete senteces. Any distaraction (like applause, pauses or breaking voice) will probably “destroy” the sentence and it will not make its way to the translation stage. But it is a good tool for getting a general idea of what’s going on.)

  4. I don’t think there were subtitles only for the part where Mr. Eric Miyashiro appeared, so I have included the content of his talk.

    Meet KT
    Eric has been traveling all over Japan for an event called “Band Clinic”. At one of the venues, he met Kaneshiro-sensei. Eric had always been a fan of KT. He had also watched their YouTube videos. He had always wanted to perform with KT someday. He asked Kaneshiro-sensei to perform with KT, and it came true.

    Rehearsal at KT a few days before
    He went to KT a few days before and had a meeting from morning till 5 pm. He spent more time talking with them than practicing for the ensemble. He responded to their love problems and so on. The students, he described them as open-minded and genuine. He was very much looking forward to this collaboration.

    Introduction of the first song, “African Symphony”
    This song is also a cheer song for a baseball game. He arranged it to make it even more African.

    Introduction of the second song, “愛がすべて Love is All That Matters”
    This is a pop song from the 70’s, used in TV commercials and variety shows. This is a song that makes one’s heart throb. The trumpet is used in the intro part, which is the main feature of this song.

    Q1: Do you have any interesting episodes?
    A story of Eric’s failure at a concert was presented. When he went on stage, he realized that he had brought his trumpet with the slide part (tube) disconnected, but he continued with it. He continued to play, but the pitch of the trumpet was one octave higher than the original. It was a very hard time. Nevertheless, after the performance, Eric was told that today’s performance went well. He pays special attention to this when he goes on stage these days.
    Q2: What was your impression of KT at the rehearsal on March 22?
    He has been going around and asking people to ask him questions, but he has not received many questions. However, he did get a lot of questions from the members of KT. He said it must be because of the excellent guidance policy of the advisor.
    Q3: What do you value in your music activities?
    We, as performers, tell various stories to the audience by changing the pitch and intensity of the sound. We must not bring our personal depression or excitement into the performance. We should not bring in our stresses, be they happy, sad, or whatever. We must do our best to paint a picture with our sound.
    Y-san: We also had a different feeling in the days after Eric’s guidance, and we were able to put our energy into our practice.

    Introduction of the third song “Treasure Island”
    He came to Japan 35 years ago. “Treasure Island” was played as an encore piece at a concert. He thought this song was cool and just a fun song filled with treasures. So, while doing some research on it, he met the arranger, Toshio Mashima. He also met the composer, Hirotaka Izumi. I regret that both of them have passed away. He arranged the music in his own way.

    Encore “Winter Games”
    He apologized for the deliberate encore ritual.
    This is a very beautiful song composed by David Foster during the 1989 Calgary Olympics.

    • Hi Rob,

      I have watched the past 2 concerts from the Badger state and you will simply be amazed. From the time zone conversion, the concerts start at 4AM. I’m usually on the computer about a half hour early to make sure the link is okay. The concert has an MC (sometimes a musician from the band) who speaks in Japanese but there have been closed captions before. The concert is presented in sections (concert band section, jazz section, marching band section and a special stage performance of the color guard to taped music; which for copyright reasons may not be audible), There was also a percussion section in one of their concerts, so it may vary from one year to the next.
