Band 54th Regular Concert:

Click picture to watch video

Band 54th Regular Concert was earlier than usual, likely because of the upcoming trip to Rose Parade (video by st.taketo). Two shows (noon and 4pm) on December 18, 2017 at School Festival Hall, all sold-out of course. Eyewitness story is here, and report by school site here, both in Japanese. This is the event the seniors traditionally play last time with the band but this year they obviously went on to the Rose Parade. Highlight of the concert was the premiere of Jun’ichi Naitō‘s latest work “Make Your Dreams Come True” which was commissioned by Tachibana and conducted by Kazumi Itani:

Band upcoming trip to the US was covered by MK News (monthly newspaper of Kyoto-based MK Taxi) on December 1, 2017, click here and see the front page and page 12. Translation of the article to English by Tetsuya T -san is here.

Parade at Fushimi Ōtesuji Shopping Street:

Click picture to watch video

Christmas shoppers at Fushimi Ōtesuji Shopping Street were treated with high-class entertainment as band paraded the street twice on November 23, 2017 (video by st.taketo). The street is located about mile west from the school and has origins in 1594 when it served as main access to Toyotomi Hideyoshi -built Fushimi Castle. The theme of using only orange uniform this year is maintained. Very much like Kyoto Sakura Parade -like environment with tight quarters but the main obstacle for the band this time was provided by the passing trains…

This event was to celebrate their participation on the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Joint concert (October 1):

Click picture to watch video

The joint concert series continues in autumn at School Festival Hall on October 1, 2017 and we had traditional stage show (video above by st.taketo).

Much more extraordinary was the concert featuring music from space-opera anime created by legendary Leiji Matsumoto (=Gene Roddenberry of Japan). Band plays with Uchide Middle School theme music from his 70s hit anime series Ginga Tetsudō 999 and Uchū Senkan Yamato (video below by Mô de in The Japan).

Radio performance at FM Kyoto 89.4 α.-station:

Band performed in radio at FM Kyoto 89.4 α.-station in their “Tuning Room” -program which focused on brass band scene in Japan and in Kyoto and Kansai specially on October 1, 2017. (note at Tanaka-sensei facebook is here, and program description here, in Japanese).

Field show at School Sports Festival:

Band field show was part of the program at the School Sports Festival held on September 29, 2017. Note at school site is here, in Japanese.

45th Kansai Marching Contest:

The 45th Kansai Marching Contest (=Qualification for the 30th All-Japan Marching Contest) on September 23, 2017 delivered a bitter pill to the band, like previous year they won Gold but did not win a spot to proceed further to National Finals (official results are here, in Japanese). Report at school site is here (in Japanese).

Full result list of the National Finals is here (in Japanese).

School festival “Tachibanasai”:

Click picture to watch video

Traditional cultural festival “Tachibanasai” was held on September 9, 2017 at school and this time extra festivities were in place as this was the official celebration of the 115th Anniversary of Kyoto Tachibana High School. Reports on the event at school site are here and here (in Japanese). Short video above by 進学通信関西版 uses the festival to introduce the school and we see lots of activities taking place that day, including glimpses of the band as well. The taiko-drummers looked awesome too!

Short video on the band 3rd year members’ performance at Courtyard Stage is below (video by mas woo). A bit longer video at bilibili is here.

30th Kyoto Marching Contest:

Click picture to watch video

Band won Gold at the 30th Kyoto Marching Contest (=Qualification for the 30th All-Japan Marching Contest) on September 2, 2017 at Maizuru Culture Park Gymnasium and proceeded to the 45th Kansai Marching Contest (see full results in Japanese here, video by I LOVE BRASS).

The magnificent opening solo (=Mark Mancina song “Dusty Steps Into History” from Disney 2013 movie “Planes“) and parts of the subsequent drill are borrowed from their National-Gold-Winning-program of 2015 (see that drill here for comparison) so they sure are serious now! As per the rule change, the T-formation is now missing. They continue with “The Bandwagon” by Philip Sparke. Fanfare from “Star Wars” is followed by “Cantina Theme” of the same movie, and the drunken sway gets you every time! At the end they obviously play their trademark “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)“. Onwards to Kansai Marching Contest!

Parade nearby Nishikyōgoku Stadium, Kyoto:

Click picture to watch video

Hot late summer day and cicadas providing background music we have again parade nearby Nishikyōgoku Stadium, Kyoto this time to support Kyoto Sanga F.C. (=J2 League pro soccer club) against Ōita Trinita (it was a draw) on August 20, 2017. Trombones were back in the lead again and using the Sanga jerseys (purple=home jersey, white=away jersey) means the band now can be called also the Purple Devils… Try not to faint of cuteness when at 8:13 band sings “Mickey Mouse March” from 1955 TV-show “The Mickey Mouse Club” (video by 慶次郎前田).

Halftime show was also part of the program (video by st.taketo):

Kyoto Sanga promoted the “Purple Devils” big time at their webpage too (see here, in Japanese). Short note of the event at school site is here (Wayback Machine) (in Japanese).

54th Kyoto Brass Band Competition of the 65th All-Japan Band Competition (Category A):

Band wins Gold in the 54th Kyoto Brass Band Competition of the 65th All-Japan Band Competition in Category A on August 5, 2017. As the set piece they played March “Pathway of the Spring Breeze” (“マーチ「春風の通り道」”) by Tomohiro Nishiyama, and as the free choice piece music from the ballet “The Bronze Horseman” (“Медный всадник“) by Reinhold Glière, arranged by Norihito Hayashi. Results in Japanese are here, and a short note at the school site is here (Wayback Machine). Unfortunately the Gold was a “dud” Gold meaning that the band did not proceed further in the All-Japan Band Competition this year. Well, All-Japan Marching Contest is coming soon with hopes of better success! Another reference is here, in Japanese.

54th Kyoto Brass Band Competition of the 65th All-Japan Band Competition (Category B):

Band wins Gold in the 54th Kyoto Brass Band Competition of the 65th All-Japan Band Competition also in Category B on August 9, 2017. Kazumi Itani led the band playing Jun’ichi Naitō‘s composition “Prayer, Pride, and Passing on to Tomorrow” (“祈りと誇り、そして明日へと受け継がれてゆくもの”) for the remembrance of 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Results in Japanese are here, and note at school site is here (Wayback Machine). Category B has relaxed requirements for competition performance which means bands do not proceed further in All Japan Band Competition from here. Another reference is here, in Japanese.

Field show at 57th “Brass Band of 3000” Event at Kyocera Dome, Osaka on June 24, 2017 (video by st.taketo). This is the 10th visit of the band in this event and they surprise us again with new starter piece: “Moonlight Densetsu” from the famous magical girl anime series of the 90s, Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon followed by Dizzy Gillespie legendary “Manteca” with several solo parts. The following piece, “Tomorrow” from 70s Broadway musical “Annie” was also a new song so we had very experimental set list this time! Band motto this year is “Do My Best”. I know they do! Video on their rehearsal is here.

Joint concert (June 11):

Straight from Nara the very busy band had the third part of the joint concert at School Festival Hall on June 11, 2017 with concert performance and stage show (video by I LOVE BRASS). This year has been very orange, band has used no other uniform yet (except track suite, of course). Notice also how our favorite xylophonist is now playing drums!

Stage show at musikfest 2017:

Band 2nd/3rd-years travelled to nearby city of Nara for stage show at musikfest 2017 at Nara Park (this is the famous place with tame deers which are classified as national treasure) on June 10, 2017 (video by I LOVE BRASS, music starts at 3:54). This time we start with Sherman brothers song “It’s a Small World (After All)” made famous by Disneyland ride with same name. After Tanaka-sensei witty speech we continue (at 10:42) with Glenn MillerIn The Mood” and even the spectators go crazy! I like how we now have solo performances as standard part of the show (sax at 12:48 and clarinet at 15:06), I have missed those.

For true enthusiasts here is the rehearsal for the show above and you can see sensei-tachi busy arranging the performance (video by Uzumiko):

Parade at Brass Expo 2017:

Parade at Brass Expo 2017 at Expo Commemoration Park, Osaka on May 7, 2017 (video by st.taketo). Long expected freshmen playing debut delivered surprise from the very first second as the parade was led by saxophones instead of the trombones we have seen earlier. Band was sporting very much Tournament of Roses Parade -themed appearance from sousaphone bell covers to new T-shirts (see more of them here, in Japanese). Parade route was never-before-seen Western route the twists of which made even Tanaka-sensei unusually lively when he had to stop sousaphones derailing into grass in sharp curve (at 12:36). Interestingly many cameras were in the hands of people wearing Tachibana supporter -shirts as well as PALS production crew was again seen busy shooting, do we have another BD/DVD coming up?

The white T-shirts band were wearing were a bit special this time:

Band new Tournament of Roses Parade -T-shirt with sponsor logos

And even Tanaka-sensei has new sweater with sponsorship by Lego (I guess no surprise!) – but alas apparently there will be no Kyoto Tachibana -minifigures:

Kyoto Tachibana -minifigures will be only seen at the posters

Joint concert (May 4):

Joint concert was held at School Festival Hall on May 4, 2017 and it featured performances of several other schools as usual. The band 2nd/3rd-years played in orchestra formation the lively “Merry-Go-Round” by Philip Sparke (video by st.taketo).

Band freshmen showed their playing skills first time with “Down By the Riverside” (video by st.taketo). Notice new school uniforms and 4 new tubas!

And the concert was finished appropriately with the traditional stage show which now contains also 1980 hit song “I’m In the Mood for Dancing” by The Nolan Sisters (at 2:00, video by st.taketo):

This time the photography was forbidden in the village square where the standstill “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)” is performed – if you want to see what you missed take a look at the 2016 version here. Another novelty were the Hibike! Euphonium -themed itasha-cars at the parking place (see them at 0:27). Interestingly “Down By the Riverside” is back as the starting music followed by Pharrell WilliamsHappy” so let’s see how parade program shapes up over the course of year. Stage show at Hibike! Euphonium 2 festival arranged by Uji City and Keihan Electric Railway on April 8, 2017 at Uji City Cultural Center (video by I LOVE BRASS). We have Rikka High School on stage again (see explanation here), and like the parade program the 2017 the stage show is also almost completely new leaving only “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing) as the trademark finisher. But you cannot go wrong with Glenn MillerIn The Mood” (at 7:31) and piece of Star Wars “Main Theme” followed by “Cantina Theme” (at 10:40) – this is one classy set! And we have first sax solo for long time (at 9:29) as well as clarinet solo (at 11:41), and roaring audience in the end, good, good!

16th Kyoto Sakura Parade:

Click picture to watch video

16th Kyoto Sakura Parade on March 26, 2017 (video by Marschtanz63) started with very traditional stage show at front of Kyoto City Hall with “Winter Games” and “Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)”. News flash on the event focusing on Tachibana is here.

But when the actual parade starts the Devils reveal their true nature and all hell break loose: their 2017 parade program is almost completely overhauled and we start now with Pharrell Williams 2013 chart hit “Happy” from animated movie Despicable Me 2 and the earlier opening piece “Down By the Riverside” is now the last part of the set (starts at 12:43, video by Marschtanz63, full set list is here). Tanaka-sensei and the band must have put countless training hours to this and have achieved a new program which involves intense choreography, catchy tunes, and is so very Tachibana! And the parade route is back to Teramachi Street which keeps the bodyguards again extremely busy. Eyewitness report (in Japanese) on the event is here. Analysis of the band performance by Mäks-san is here.

    PICK UP (Report)
“The Orange Devils” Kyoto Tachibana High School Brass Band

    Page 1
Pictured here are the 3rd year students at the Kyoto Tachibana High School brass band.
The Kyoto Tachibana High School Brass Band will represent Asia and Oceania in the Rose Parade 2018 to be held on January 1, 2018, in California, USA. This will be the second time for the school to participate in the event, having first competed in 2012. This is the first time for a Japanese team to participate in the world’s most prestigious parade more than once.

    Page 12
The Kyoto Tachibana High School Brass Band, known as a strong school in marching contests, will participate in the “Rose Parade,” also known as the world’s largest and most prestigious parade, on January 1, 2018. When I spoke with the club president and the band’s advisor, I could see the originality of Tachibana High School, which has been dedicated to marching “to make the audience smile” since the beginning.

Tachibana’s “Tachibana-ness” shines through today and in the past.
The Kyoto Tachibana High School Brass Band was founded in 1961 by Hisashi Hiramatsu-sensei, who later served as president of the All-Japan Brass Band Federation, under the slogan “full of energy, full of smiles, full of dreams.” The club was a pioneer in the field of women’s bands, touring the U.K. from its inception. The current advisor, Hiroyuki Tanaka-sensei, says that the “character of Tachibana” lies in the fact that “other high schools started marching after establishing a track record in the brass band, but Tachibana focused on marching as soon as the band was founded.” In recent years, Tachibana has been featured on a national television program and has been dubbed the “Orange Devils.” “Orange” is their uniform color. I thought they would be very disappointed to be called “Devils,” but club president I-san, a third-year student, was unaffected. “We don’t mind it. We are often compared to devils because we are so phenomenal in the way we march and play with a smile on our faces while stepping up the intensity of our performance. But this is Tachibana-ness, so you can call us ‘Orange Devils’ more often.” The swing-jazz song “Sing Sing Sing” is synonymous with Tachibana because of its lightheartedness, and has been used since the 2005 contest, with arrangements added every year. The marching structure is assembled by five members selected from the club’s members. The choreography and formation changes are also devised by the students themselves. Tanaka-sensei said simply, “We have a variety of patterns prepared, so we just combine them.” This is one of Tachibana’s strengths, which can be attributed to the traditions that have been built up over time.

Tachibana’s character comes from steady practice.
Although the glamorous side of Tachibana tends to attract attention, its strength is born from the accumulation of daily practice. The team is active seven days a week, with only three days off during the Bon Festival (mid-August). Morning practice starts at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 8:00 a.m. when classes start, and evening practice is from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. when a contest is coming up. Starting with basic sound practice, they practice choreography by part, and play ensemble music several days a week. Club president I-san says, “The hardest part is practicing the steps for each part,” and it is evident that it is quite difficult for the students to match their movements while performing. She added, “Summer is the most difficult time of the year.” In addition to the heat, which is a great enemy of intense movement, it is also the time of year when contests are approaching.
Even strong marching schools seem to have a hard time finding places to practice. When I asked I-san about this, she replied, “Once or twice a week, we can use a large area of the school grounds or gymnasium, but it’s always like this. We usually do form checks by looking at the reflection in the glass of the school building, and people outside are surprised by this.”

Rose Parade that only Tachibana can offer
Tachibana is scheduled to participate in the Rose Parade in California, U.S.A., on January 1 next year. According to I-san, the club president of the 114th class, “Our graduates can also participate as long as they keep their hair black and wear no makeup.” I thought it would be difficult for them to perform or practice with their seniors who are usually far away from them. However, they said, “We are comfortable talking with our seniors. An atmosphere is created where it is easy to spend time with them. “To be honest, when I was a freshman, I thought it was difficult to talk to my seniors, but now when we practice together, they are easy to talk to, and we have become a team that honestly enjoys marching,” she replied. Moreover, she said, “The seniors, as one would expect, quickly adapt to the short practice time and perform flawlessly.”
The current members of the club, who are participating in the Rose Parade for the first time, are often surprised by the “real” American Rose Parade. I-san was shocked to hear that the marching lasts for two hours. “We have to be physically strong enough for that,” she said, planning to practice as much as possible before the parade. Unlike the reserved Japanese, the audience is said to be loud and excited. It is hard to imagine the excitement in Japan, as tickets for some of the auditoriums are hard to come by.
Through this interview, I felt that the reason Tachibana is putting so much effort into the Rose Parade is because it is something that only Tachibana can do. This was also reflected in I-san’s honest comment, “The other day, we participated in a parade in the Yamashina area, and we were very happy that the spectators enjoyed it so much.” Advisor Tanaka-sensei also said, “I want to give them an experience that they cannot have anywhere else, more so than any higher award they may receive at any higher level of competition.” This was the very essence of Tachibana’s character.

    Photo captions on page 12
Photo 1: Members of the club thinking about a marching composition that will be enjoyed by the audience.

    • Yes. At graduation there were 31 members of the 114th class and all of them participated in the regular concert. There were at least 7 members who left the band during the three years: Every year there are several 1st students who leave fairly early – considering the amount of hard work involved it is only natural that some decide to quit. In this case 3 first year students (among them 2 clarinets) left the band.

There was a color guard and a sousaphone who left the band halfway through the second year. And a clarinet who left the band after two full years with the band. It happens almost every year that one or two students leave the band upon entering their senior year – probably because school work becomes more demanding with the upcoming finals.

And then there was a trombone who left the band for unknown reasons just a few months before graduation.

    • Like in other videos, I can hear Chippi’s xylophone loud and clear, cutting through the mix of all the instruments. That was a hot, humid day, I could tell Ron was sweating up a storm. I wonder why they changed into their long-sleeved uniforms and didn’t stick with the Sanga shirts they were wearing earlier. I thought this was the performance when soccer balls from the players started landing right around them while they were playing, but maybe that was another year.
